![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() In his first collection, North American Lake Monsters, Nathan Ballingrud carved out a distinctly singular place in American fiction with his “piercing and merciless” (Toronto Globe and Mail) portrayals of the monsters that haunt our lives-both real and imagined: “What Nathan Ballingrud does in North American Lake Monsters is to reinvigorate the horror tradition” (Los Angeles Review of Books). A gripping collection of six stories of terror-including the novella “The Visible Filth,” the basis for the upcoming major motion picture-by Shirley Jackson Award–winning author Nathan Ballingrud, hailed as a major new voice by Jeff VanderMeer, Paul Tremblay, and Carmen Maria Machado-“one of the most heavyweight horror authors out there” (The Verge). ![]() The vanished birds simon jimenez7/8/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() This is a mostly progressive future, but classism, unchecked capitalism, and resource exhaustion loom large. When Fumiko learns Ahro has powers that could speed up space travel-abilities sought by Fumiko’s employer, the megacorporation Umbai, which is looking for more efficient ways to pillage planets-she offers Nia the opportunity to keep the boy hidden, which Nia accepts, leading to ripples of choices and consequences. As they travel through “pocket space,” where a few months pass for them while years go by in normal space, they grow close and Nia becomes protective of Ahro. Spaceship captain Nia agrees to take Ahro back to Pelican, a station Fumiko designed. Nearly 1,000 years later, Ahro, a boy who doesn’t speak, crash-lands on a distant farming world. ![]() Fumiko extends her life through periods of suspended animation as humans colonize the galaxy. But Dana’s efforts fail, and Earth is abandoned. A century from now, aerospace engineer Fumiko believes humans should leave the climate-ravaged Earth, and regretfully chooses her career designing space stations over her lover, Dana, who would rather advocate for trying to save the planet. In a profound look at humankind’s spacefaring future, Jimenez’s debut tells of both anguish and love as the result of heart-wrenching decisions. ![]() ![]() Originally a Phoenician pictogram representing a leg with a hand, and denoting a sound similar to the Y in “yes,” I was later adopted by Semitic groups to describe the word “arm” which, in Semitic languages, began with a J (also possessing the same Y sound as in “yes”). J’s phonetic quest for independence probably began with the sound of the letter I. (A story for another day: the name of the dot over the “j” and “i,” and why we use them.) Are J and I related? With the introduction of lowercase letters to the Roman numeric system, J was commonly used to denote the conclusion of a series of ones-as in “xiij” for the number 13. ![]() The letter J began as a swash, a typographical embellishment for the already existing I. It is no coincidence that I and J stand side by side-they actually started out as the same character. ![]() J is a bit of a late bloomer after all, it was the last letter added to the alphabet. From its humble beginnings as a Roman numeral to its eventual tenth position in the English alphabet, J has had quite a linguistic journey. ![]() The clockwork scarab7/7/2023 ![]() Sherlock Holmes’s “The Woman” from “A Scandal in Bohemia.) The plot rapidly thickens, though, and Ms. Miss Stoker and Miss Holmes are asked by Irene Adler to investigate the mysterious deaths and disappearances of several young ladies of high society. The premise is relatively straightforward. Unfortunately, although entertaining, the book never quite lived up to my expectations. ![]() Review:Īt first glance, The Clockwork Scarab has everything going for it: a interesting premise, mystery and mayhem, and not one but two potentially fantastic heroines. ![]() If Stoker and Holmes don’t unravel why the belles of London society are in such danger, they’ll become the next victims. Now fierce Evaline and logical Mina must resolve their rivalry, navigate the advances of not just one but three mysterious gentlemen, and solve murder with only one clue: a strange Egyptian scarab. And when two society girls go missing, there’s no one more qualified to investigate. But when you’re the sister of Bram and the niece of Sherlock, vampire hunting and mystery solving are in your blood. Evaline Stoker and Mina Holmes never meant to get into the family business. ![]() Once in a Lifetime by Ariel Tachna7/7/2023 ![]() ![]() Many now-famous A-list and B-list actors got work in Lifetime movies early in their careers or when they were struggling to break through. ![]() The network has also become a veritable hub for talented women, both in front of and behind the camera. In fact, Lifetime is no stranger to the occasional Emmy nomination or positive review. Nowadays, Lifetime movies are commonly divided into a few respective categories: soapy biopics like "Harry & Meghan: A Royal Romance," child abduction stories, thrillers involving family secrets (such as the infamous "Mother, May I Sleep with Danger?"), teen dramas, and romantic comedies.Īimed primarily at an audience of mostly women, these films come in well below most cinematic standards but still represent a qualitative leap over the network's earliest output. Needless to say, the recipe worked, and the network even set up its own respective channel just for movies. Consider it a relatively tame preview of what was to come, as it was followed by tawdry fare such as "Abducted: A Father's Love," "Co-Ed Call Girl," and numerous other titles. ![]() ![]() Called "Memories of Murder," it centers on a woman with amnesia who suddenly gets her memory back and becomes convinced there's another woman out to get her. While Lifetime movies might seem like a tradition as old as cable TV itself, the first one debuted in 1990, six years after the network was established. ![]() Pirate latitudes a novel7/7/2023 ![]() ![]() After venturing to the island of Matanceros with the promise of riches beyond their wildest dreams, the crew hits more than a few snags. ![]() ![]() ![]() Enlisted by Governor James Almont of Port Royal, at the time an English stronghold in the Caribbean, Hunter and his men are tasked with raiding a nearby Spanish galleon rumored to be carrying gold. Naturally, one may wonder, after adapting 13 of Crichton's novels to film since 1971, why hasn't Hollywood committed to taking a shot at bringing Pirate Latitudes to the big screen? Despite whispers of a cinematic adaptation around the time of its publication, the seafaring thrill ride has sat dormant in the halls of entertainment for more than a decade. The result is an undeniably spirited novel that recalls classical storytelling and delivers one of the author's most exhilarating reading experiences. Taking place in Caribbean waters and on various islands including Jamaica, Pirate Latitudes sees Crichton combining history and imagination with an old-fashioned sense of adventure. ![]() ![]() The history of objects - motorcycles and otherwise - has fascinated Wolfe since he was a thin, lanky, poor kid in Bettendorf, Iowa. ‘The alleys were safe places’: How a difficult childhood led to 'picking' I need to start really appreciating the things that I truly, truly love.’ And that's what I'm doing.”Ī 1948 Harley-Davidson EL Panhead with Sidecar that will be auctioned off as part of Mike Wolfe's As Found collection. “We get a call like, ‘Hey, I need to start downsizing. ![]() “What I'm going through right now is kind of what a lot of people that I film with are going through,” he added. “I'm going to be 60 in a few years, and I'm starting to think about: What do I want my collection to be?
